Learning from the podcasts

For days now I have been hooked to listening to the different shows available on Apple‘s Podcasts… and I’ve grown especially fond of tech shows. Now it seems that something good has already come out of it.

Personal Security

On a previous episode of the KFI Tech Guy speak of security, particularly for the home user. This means, as much as possible, free software to protect yourself. One such free app is the AVG Anti-Virus… with its small footprint and very reasonable price… FREE!

Another interesting software is Microsoft’s redux on its AntiSpyware program. Microsoft Defender is still on the beta 2 stage, but it functions really well. And for authentic Microsoft Windows users, this is definitely one that you can use.

Browsing and Email

From the days of the old Firebird, Mozilla has grown to become a really great open source developer. With the Advent of the Firefox browser, the experience of millions of people using the Internet has changed drastically, and for the better. With Firefox, gone are the days of constant popups and unwanted spyware. If you are reading this through Internet Explorer, then please do yourself a favor and get Firefox now.

Mozilla Thunderbird has done for POP mail what Firefox did for browsing. Faster and safer, simply put… better. Do not settle for software that has not been given attention to by its developers for years… such as Microsoft’s Outlook Express. Now if you want to have a more secure and worry-free E-mail experience, go Thunderbird.

Desktop Publishing

Finally, if you are like me who has been using Microsoft Office since the advent of Windows, then maybe its time for a change. OpenOffice is an open source office suite that has the same functionality that Microsoft Office has, minus the bulk and as open source software go, is absolutely free.

You don’t have to worry about compatibilities because OpenOffice creates, edits and saves documents the same as the Microsoft format… this means, it doesn’t really matter if the computer you are opening the file in is using something else.

This is not a paid advertisement, nor is it a shameless way of promoting software. This is simply an observation and suggestion by someone who cares. If you don’t believe me, maybe you can ask millions of users who think the same way.
