Looking through Leopard’s eyes

Its been about a day since upgrading to Leopard, and so far so good. There’s so much for me to discover and learn, and since I spend most of my free time just playing around with the family, there has basically been no progress in terms in learning this new operating system.

The system

I did get a couple of nice surprises during the time I have played around with the system. One, being a user of Boot Camp back in its beta stages, it was good to know that I did not have to do the entire partitioning and reinstalling of Windows Vista… just inserted the dvd and everything was done automatically.

Finder

The other surprise had something to do with Finder. I knew about Cover Flow for your documents, ala iTunes or Quick Look as Apple wants to call it. What I didn’t know was that icons would resemble a lot like what the original file is… that is, I was navigating to one of my web documents and I found that the icon was a mini version of it.

Stacks

There are mixed opinions as to whether this is really a good thing or just an annoyance. I am still in the honeymoon stage so I can’t really say much… maybe after a month or so of use, I have more to base my opinion on. Like a lot of people, I myself do not like how Apple displays stacks. Its good we have overlays. But the folks at Cupertino should really look into this.

The Dock

The look is okay, but I am a bit confused with how OS X Leopard handles active applications… with the use of a barely noticeable ball of light on the Dock. I kinda like the black arrow used by Tiger. And if you notice the image above, after installing both iLife 08 and iWork 08 suites, the dock has become over-populated. Once I get the chance though, I will create some more stacks to work around the problem.

iChat

Finally, I found it really cool that I no longer need to fiddle around settings and register to third party services just to get my Google Talk account to work with iChat. Now, I only need to find someone I know with Leopard and Google Talk to test things out.
