Sneakernet

I honestly cannot remember the last time I used a 3.5″ floppy disk. Its unreliability and size restriction was something to think about. And with the advent of networks, the internet, cd-roms and other media, returning to the dark days of storage would be unthinkable… or so I thought.
Of all the places, I wouldn’t think that here in Australia, while I was at work, I had to resort to the old-fashioned Sneakernet style of transferring files. Our old network was being phased off and unfortunately, we were caught in-between changes. That coupled with antiquated hardware made this a rather interesting experience for me.
The thing that annoys me though is not having to come back to this type of system… God knows at one point or another, we would be encountering situations such as these, but why in the world do we still have to rely on very, very old media? Better yet, a network is the lifeblood of any organization, so why not make sure that everything is running 100% before actually turning the old one off?
That is just something to think about.
