This year’s Royal Adelaide Show is the third since we’ve been here, but its actually our first time attending it. Despite the cold and the sudden downpour, Kitchie, Timothy, Jon and I all had the time of our lives.

The experience

Its more or less what we used to see on television, carnival rides, games and food that you can just buy and take with you wherever. The biggest difference was the focus on agriculture and livestock. We all got a chance to see huge machinery used in farming, and we did get a chance to pet an array of baby animals.

Jon was lucky enough to get into one the “Cellar Door Experience” as they were starting. He got the chance to taste 4 of the best Australian wines and hear about each of their stories too.

There was also the Motor Pavilion which gave me the chance to get in the front seat of some the really great cars and SUVs in the market today. If I were in the market for a new ride (and if I could just afford it), I know what I would like to get.

The showbags

One of the crowd drawers for the event are the show bags. With prices ranging from A$1 to A$40, there is certainly something for everyone. Timothy got a couple from Bob the Builder and Shrek, Kitchie had a couple of magazine-based bags and Jon scored a really cool “Don’t Hassel the Hoff”. Me? Well, I had the most fun watching the family enjoy themselves, and that was more than enough for me.

Jon and I were able to get ourselves on the cover of this year’s IKEA catalogue (well, at least our copy) through the IKEA showbag. It was just a shame Tim was asleep. Otherwise, we could all have been in it for lola Cynthia.

The rides

Being on the show would not be complete until we get on some of the rides… which we all did. Timothy got on his first bump car ride with his old man as uncle Jon was right behind us. Kitchie and Jon got on the “Techno Jump”. Jon and I dared and went through with the “Mega Drop” and finally Timothy went on the “Truck Convoy” ride.

On leaving

I have to admit that I had such a great time that I actually wasn’t ready to leave when we did. We only waited for the fireworks which were pretty good, then we headed back home.

As soon as we arrived, Tim wanted to do a little show-and-tell with all his show bag goodies. This is one event I am quite certain that he will want to attend over and over for quite some time. Its definitely a fitting end to Father’s day.

The Royal Adelaide Show is on from September 5 to the 13th. So if you have yet to experience something like it and if you’re in town, I suggest you head on over and be prepared to have a fun-filled day.
