Nokia N97

After shifting to WordPress, I never really thought of posting more than one entry a day. But today’s Nokia unveiling of the N97 deserves to be on a post of its own.

Nokia has long been a front-runner in the mobile phone world. With the release of two iPhone versions, the Blackberry Bold and Storm, as well as the insane amount of great looking phones from HTC, it seemed that the Finnish company will start to loose its ground on the market.

The new addition to Nokia’s smartphone family boasts a 3.5-inch, 640 x 360 pixel touchscreen display, QWERTY keyboard, a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss glass and “DVD quality” video capture at 30fps. And like most people holding off from buying an iPhone 3G… 32GB of internal memory. The best part, using the microSD expansion, you can upgrade the N97′s storage up to 48GB! Read the full specs from the official press release.

Granted that it is thicker than the iPhone 3G, but the N97 is definitely smaller in every aspect compared to the previous Nokia Communicator iterations. Besides, you have to give up something for all its features. I am willing to give up the phone being thinner, as long as it is better equipped.

But as with any gadget, we will have to wait until the N97 is actually in the wild for some heavy duty, real-life hands-on. Come the 1st quarter of 2009, people will be definitely paying for all the listed features of Nokia’s new flagship phone. Until then, I will be among those who will be keeping a close eye on this very promising smartphone.
