Altec Lansing Backbeat

As a young boy, I was introduced to music pretty early, and had at one point or another access to portable music via the Walkman.

3 decades and huge technological advancements layer, no longer is the Walkman the dominant name in portable music. There are no casettes, and there is hardly anyone I know that make use of CDs anymore. All in the name of the MP3.

But despite the huge changes in audio technology, one thing still remains. As with the automobile which seems to have a very difficult time shedding the axle and its wheels, the audiophile seems to be tethered to wired headsets when playing portable music.

Logitech came up with one of the first wireless headsets I’ve seen down under called the FreePulse. Unfortunately, I previously owned a wired headset with a similar design, and although it looked pretty cool, it was actually very uncomfortable once you had it on for a while.

Kleer Wireless Earbuds

Then, Kleer gets into the fray with what seems to be a promising iteration of the Bluetooth headset they dubbed DigiFi Wireless Opera. It is however, only available in the US at the moment, with no signs of the company shipping outside the product outside the country.

Sennheiser’s MX W1 uses Kleer’s wireless technology, and seems to be the coolest looking albeit the most dear of the lot at US$500 a pop.

And finally, there’s Altec Lansing with its own wireless set called the Backbeat (main photo).

This product was only unveiled in this years CES, and will probably be available initially in America. But I do have high hopes with this one since Altec Lansing does have its Australian wing of resellers.

As with any other new release, we will have to wait until the products are out in the market and are being used in the real world before we can actually say which ones are really worth your money.
