Middle Earth revisited

Well, sort of. If there was one thing I was looking forward to after the holiday season in terms of gaming, that would be the release of EA Games’ Lord of the Rings Conquest.
I have been a huge fan of the trilogy since the movies were released. Read the books, played the games both good and bad, and even find myself listening to the soundtrack once in a while.
Seeing the game in the shelf of our local movie rental company, I decided to give it a try… to see if this could be the next purchase I would make.
With little Timothy watching, I put the disk in and started out with the tutorial. It was then and there that I came upon the realization that despite the level of technology we as humans have already achieved, we are still plagued with the curse of the movie to game conversion. The Lord of the Rings Conquest is no exception.
EA Games in my opinion was able to create a lot of great games with the Lord of the Rings franchise, from The Battle for Middle Earth on the PC to The Return of the King for the Playstation 2.
I was able to get my hands on Star Wars Battlefront II from which Conquest based its engine on, and although I was able to see through the mediocrity of the game despite the Lucas Arts tag, it seemed to me that it was well suitable for the environment… huge battles, explosions and “lasers”.
Unfortunately, the same concept does not seem to go well for EA’s next hopeful. During the training alone, I noticed a bug in which when you get to the barricaded gates after defeating orcs as a scout, you can’t seem to change into any other class, rendering you unable to proceed. I turned the console off disappointed and a little bit pissed.
Again, I loved the movies, the books and some of the games. But Conquest was just a total waste of time. Honestly, its not even worth the rental fee.
