From hiring testers for a “New Game Machine” to the surfacing of a rumor about the second generation Playstation Portable, Sony’s media strategy seems to be taking the same road a certain Cupertino-based company has.
Now, there are some new rumors about a Playstation 3 Slim.
Anyone who is into gaming will know that Sony, after a few years of its console’s release, comes up with a bit of a redesign. This move both lowers the cost of manufacturing as well as improve the hardware by making use of components that would have been way too expensive or, even non-existent during its first iteration.
Having had a look at the purported photos, I am greatly interested but at the same time, not convinced.
To me, it looks like the rumored photos are showing an Apple MacBook-like design based on a single (black?) aluminum chassis. This would definitely make it lighter, sturdier, sleeker and way cooler to look at.
This move however, would only be logical if the manufacturing of the current console just costs the world to Sony. This is because even if the hardware were to look cool as ice, the amount of games (or the lack thereof) defines the hardware they are played on.
As the release of Resident Evil 5 and Yakuza has shown, a lot more people will be willing to shell out a little more cash if the content was actually any good. Gamers after all are hungry for good games no matter the platform.
Now, my only thoughts are for the hardware specs. If any of these photos are true, then we can assume that there will be 120GB units available. But what about everything else? What about Blu Ray, wired and wireless connectivity plus the expandability of the hard drive? All of these I have come to know and love.
These questions and more can only be answered in this year’s E3. The anticipation is killing me!
